Since September 1995 a small group of volunteers have been “on the streets” on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. They work in twos or threes through rain, hail or snow (and sometimes all three!).
The work of Nightlight involves a number of approaches including demonstrating a practical and relevant Christian support and help in the Odyssey, sharing the Gospel over a cup of tea at our tea table on Botanic Avenue and the provision of suitable Christian literature and resources.
Contacts with people both young and old have been made. We reach out to them in what ever way is appropriate. Often we offer practical help in a wide range of situations. From stolen handbags to stabbings, from the happy to the homeless, from the lonely to the party animal, from the jilted to the totally lost, such is the multi coloured tapestry of Nightlight. It could never be described as mundane or boring.
The Nightlight office is located in the Kinghan Church, Botanic Avenue.
Belfast’s main entertainment area is known as The Golden Mile and the team working there meet in the Nightlight office right in the centre of that area.
The Odyssey Pavilion is a purpose built entertainment area on the east bank of the River Lagan. The Odyssey team usually meet up in one of the coffee bars in the complex before starting work.
The volunteers are committed Christians of all ages, from a variety of backgrounds, who have a concern for the work of Nightlight and have responded to God’s call to become more actively involved. Our volunteer team is constantly changing due to personal circumstances and we are always pleased to welcome new people on board.
