Phylis Linton: West Church Presbyterian Ballymena
As I reflect on the year that has passed; the words “the Lord is my light and my salvation” reflect the events of my work over the year.
Firstly, through the time I spend in one-to-one evangelism with people. From the man who stood at a bridge in Ballycastle and invited Jesus into his life, to the gentleman in December who cried with me as he prayed: “Come into my heart Lord Jesus, come into my heart today - thank you Lord!” Just a week later he went to meet his Saviour. From a young woman who had not been to church for many years, to her mum who, three months later, followed her into the Kingdom.
Secondly, through sitting alongside those whose lives are filled with the darkness of their own sin, or what others have inflicted on them, leaving brokenness and pain. Often I hear the stories they never tell others, the memories that haunt, the despair that leads to attempted suicide and hopelessness. In those times prayer, coffee, God’s Word, a hand held, a joke shared, and a promise of confidentiality bring light into the darkness and take away the fear, the guilt, the disgrace and the hopelessness.
Thirdly, by bringing God’s light into a variety of situations - spending time with older people who have such fear of losing control of their lives, preaching in worship, encouraging those who fear the next test result, discovering new ways to do worship in small groups, and being involved in a new prayer ministry team.
All these occasions make up a year where God has been “my strength, and my refuge”.
