Rural Mission

As part of the follow up to the mission planning process, the Research and Resources Committee of the Board of Mission in Ireland are beginning a 'conversation' around the challenges and opportunities in rural mission in Ireland today. The aim is to begin to learn from those ministering on the ground so as to best shape the appropriate resourcing of congregations working in this setting. Please pray for this ongoing work.

While recognizing that the English rural setting is different from that in many parts of Ireland, we offer the following two resources to stimulate thinking in this area in the meantime.

Faith in the Countryside - Transforming Communities

Rural Christians live at a rare moment of both challenge and opportunity. Should we reject, adapt or accept that rural Britain has been experiencing a quiet and largely undetected revolution? Churches find themselves in uncertain territory as they have to grapple with many different issues in a short period of time.

The last major report on what is happening to the church in the countryside was produced by the Church of England more than 20 years ago. How have Anglican and Free churches been coping?

As a result of extensive travel and visits to all regions of the United Kingdom, Declan Flanagan has had the opportunity to visit rural churches from all the main denominational groupings. You will find helpful insights, inspiring stories and exercises that your church may use in assessing the present and preparing for the future.

Your copy of Faith in the Countryside can be ordered at the introductory price of £6.00 (postage free). Download and complete the order form below and send with your cheque made payable to Rural Ministries to:

Rural Evangelism in the 21st Century - Barry Osbourne

Our rural communities look idyllic from a distance. In fact they are complex social mixes which are experiencing the challenge of change.

But there are fruitful approaches to evangelism in this context – ones that pay attention to context, and build on local witness. This booklet offers practical strategies, but ones that spring from a deep understanding of these communities.
